This is a new area which is relevant to couples who may have a known problem which can be inherited. For example, consider a couple who have a child with cystic fibrosis, a serious lung disease which may recur in future pregnancies.
One option is to take a single cell from the embryos and test it for the disease. That way, only the embryos free of the disease are returned to the mother, so that there is certainty that no siblings would be affected by the same disease.
